Is there a better holiday than the 4th of July? I’d be hard pressed to find one. Families seem to find a way to get along. Corporate America manages to get everyone an extra day off. The weather is always on point each year. Local produce is in full swing making desserts and side dishes vie with meats off the grill for center stage. A cold beer never tasted better and for us in the catering business we get a welcome break from June, the busiest month of the year.
Each year we celebrate the great many freedoms we have been provided with our declaration of independence. The resulting diversity and dynamic make up of our nation is on proud display and reveals what makes our country great. Being the catering guy this diversity is of course most evident in what people eat and drink. Walking through the park and wandering to the beach the international array of sights, sounds, smells and tastes provides a microcosm of the melting pot that is the United States. The smell of smoked meats, charred sausages and fireworks is oddly satisfying. The neatly lined up bowls of international condiments and salads is a kaleidoscope color.
Every year my assignment is lunch. I don’t want to do any work once I get to the beach so I opt for making three giant sandwiches that can be carved and eaten whenever anyone is hungry. The sandwiches have now become a tradition. Really a glorified submarine sandwich station. What would be more American! This year’s selections included….
Beverages of choice included local beer, local beer, local beer and Stella Artois for my brother-in-law. When all was said and done I was fortunate enough to grill without grilling that day, support the local economy, get my extra day off, get to the beach and see fireworks. The freedom to be able to have this opportunity, be with those I love and experience the diversity that makes our lives so rich is something I treasure. Is there a holiday better than the 4 of July?
